Oro Court NO. 20
History

Oro Court No. 20 of the Daughters of the Imperial Court received its charter on August 21, 1953. Leading the Court were Dt. Bessie Lopez, serving as Illustrious Commandress; Dt. Florence Washington, as 1st Lt. Commandress; and Dt. Bessie Mavley, as 2nd Lt. Commandress. However, during Dt. Lopez’s second term, the Court became inactive. Determined not to stay dormant, Oro Court was reactivated in 1965, under the leadership of Dt. Gwendolyn Toppings as Illustrious Commandress. Under her guidance, the Court flourished steadily. Today, Oro Court boasts 41 members, including 36 past Commandresses (some deceased) and 4 Honorary Past Imperial Commandresses. The current leadership comprises Illustrious Commandress Dt. Michelle Williams, 1st Lt. Commandress Dt. LaShone Petty, 2nd Lt. Commandress PC Dorothy ("Sissy") Byrd, and Recordress PC Barbara Woodson. Their meetings convene on the third Friday of each month at 7:30 PM at The Masonic Lodge.

Over the years, Oro Court has remained committed to supporting and assisting the community. The Court extends its aid to various charities, such as The Rescue Mission for the Homeless, The Opportunity Center for the Homeless, The Salvation Army, NAACP, UNCF, March of Dimes, Sickle Cell Foundation, Breast Cancer Foundation, Battered Women's Center, and The Child Crisis Center. Additionally, they actively participate in initiatives like The Ronald McDonald House, The Community-wide Thanksgiving Dinner Giveaway, The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Giving Initiative, and The Holy Royal Arch Christmas Dinner and Toy Giveaway for children. Moreover, they collaborate with Oro Temple No. 9 to conduct Voter Registration drives throughout the year. The Court’s social calendar is filled with events like the Potentate & Imperial Commandress Ball, Egyptian Tea, Kwanzaa, Juneteenth celebrations, and Membership Drives.
